Abama Blue Ocean Cetacean Experience

18 July 2025

8:30 - 15:00h

Some of the best cetacean watching in the world is right here in the Canary Islands. The Franja Marina Teno-Rasca, the strip of the Atlantic between the southwest coast of Tenerife and the island of La Gomera, is a place of extraordinary biodiversity and one of the top cetacean habitats on Earth.

This month we bring you a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This excursion is no ordinary whale watching tour. You will be taken out by two of the most experienced researchers and conservationists in the Canary Islands who, because of their special certifications, will be able to bring you closer to the whales than anyone else can. More details below. They are also certified eco operators, so the experience will be safe for the animals, and, for the participants, more akin to a scientific expedition than tourism.

Lunch at Abama's Atlántico restaurant is included, with a special menu created for the occasion, and we will provide VIP transport to and from Abama.

Participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Francis Pérez

Francis, who was the Photographic Director of our Abama Blue Ocean book, is a Canary Islands native and one of the world's foremost marine photographers. He was a World Press Photo winner in 2017 and has numerous National Geographic and other publication covers to his name.

His decades of work in the Franja Marina Teno-Rasca have given him close professional contact with government agencies, international conservancy agencies, scientific researchers, and many for whom this marine area forms the core of their professional life. Together with them, he has participated in scores of important projects for research and knowledge dissemination both in the Canary Islands and in other areas, such as Chile, with significant populations of cetaceans. He is the President of Pelagic Life Canarias.

Mercedes Reyes

Mercedes is a marine biologist by training and the Founder and CEO of WhaleWise Eco Tours. Her lifelong interest in and care for whales and dolphins, combined with her international expertise in educating and protecting cetaceans, led her to set up her organisation in Tenerife in 2018. WhaleWise offers whale observation experiences that are eco-friendly, sustainable and responsible and donates part of its profits to projects that proactively work to improve whale and dolphin research and conservation projects.

In late 2022, WWET formed a partnership with WeWhale, a like-minded organisation that provides whale-friendly, eco-friendly and C02 neutral whale observation experiences to create global whale awareness and actively contribute to cetacean protection. You can see Mercedes and learn more about her philosophy in this WeWhale video.

About the experience

All participants will set out from Los Gigantes on Mercedes's boat, where she will explain more about the area and its marine residents. Francis and his crew member will set sail in his Zodiac in parallel, and both boats will search for cetaceans.

Once the animals have been located, if conditions permit, small groups of 3 people at a time will be transferred from the larger boat to the smaller Zodiac so they can use Francis's equipment to listen to the sounds of the cetaceans under water. Francis has the required authorization to get closer than 60 meters to the animals and get into the water himself, and he will bring a camera and observation equipment.

The objective is for all participants to feel like they are an active part of the research team.
