The idea of sustainability has expanded. The need to care for our natural environment remains stronger than ever, but true sustainability also encompasses the economic, social, and cultural aspects of every system. We hope to inspire people to enjoy their leisure time more conscientiously, while working together to make the world a better place.
Abama Green Team
At Abama, we are committed to a holistic concept of sustainability, and every year we set sustainability goals for every part of the resort. We also work through our charity organization, Abama Solidaria, to support initiatives in concert with the local government of Guía de Isora.
Our dedicated Abama Green Team focuses on actions to promote sustainability in concert with other stakeholders on the island as well. In 2021, we are working with Amate Tenerife (supporting the fight against breast cancer); local foodbanks; vulnerable children and the elderly; the Blood Bank; recycling programs; Clean Beach and bird and whale protection initiatives; and many more.
Guía de Isora and Tenerife are both Biosphere Certified Destinations since 2021, meaning that they are certified by the Responsible Tourism Institute as committed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the Guidelines of the Paris Climate Summit. In addition, Abama Golf and Las Terrazas de Abama have been named Biosphere Committed.
Abama Golf, a Golf Digest Editors’ Choice Award pick for four years running, was also the first golf course in Spain to receive the IAGTO quality certification from the World Organization of Golf Tour Operators. In 2017, it was the first course on Tenerife to be EMAS certified by the European Union, meaning that its administration has an Environmental Management System in place and that specific objectives, targets and programs have been created to continually improve environmental performance. Abama Golf also holds an ISO:14001 environmental certificate.
Las Terrazas de Abama
The resort’s Biosphere Committed Las Terrazas de Abama has found numerous ways to support the local community and environment. Our Gourmet Shop is committed to stocking “Kilometer Zero” products produced within a 100 km radius, without chemical additives, and that use environmentally friendly transport practices, as well as other organic and locally made items. AURA water and PIPOS hand sanitizer, also sold by the shop, give their profits to charity.
Las Terrazas has also made contributions to the Red Cross and supported vulnerable populations in Guía de Isora. The hotel is currently participating in a bird conservation project at Abama with the Ornithological Society of the Canary Islands, collaborating with the San Juan Association to support people with disabilities, and upcoming projects will include support for Amate Tenerife and local foodbanks.
This initiative was launched to channel Abama’s charity work and to collect funds for the many worthy projects that the local government of Guía de Isora has deemed a priority. It focuses on both the social and environmental spheres of our community, and Abama Solidaria has been blessed to receive incredible participation from owners and guests of the resort.
