One of the absolute highlights of the Gala Weekend at Abama Resort was a very special excursion to the traditional Tenerife hamlet of Chirche. Every year we try to add new and surprising items to our agenda, and this unique cultural opportunity certainly fit the bill.
Chirche is a protected natural hamlet in Guía de Isora that has a number of historical buildings still standing, and whose development has been restricted in order to retain the layout of a small traditional town. It offers islanders the special ability to step back in time, and this experience is heightened once per summer during an event when the townspeople dress themselves in traditional garb and perform reenactments of traditional town activities like milling, baking, going to school, and more.
We were lucky this year to have the Government of Guía de Isora recreate this event out of season, and 38 of our residents were able to enjoy this special window onto the past. Our guests wandered in and out of these living museum scenes whilst trying puchero coffee and pastries made of gofio before the final act: a traditional dance done by the children in the square. Afterwards, the dip into local culture continued with a wine and cheese tasting featuring products from Tenerife.
