Abama pulls out all the stops for our Owners Cup & Gala weekend 2016

As the greatest tradition of our young community thus far, the Abama Resort Owners Cup & Gala bears a heavy weight on its shoulders: every edition must be more memorable than the last. Combining sport and leisure, residents and friends, and bringing together Tenerife artists, boutiques and goods producers is a challenge, but one that we take on with great pleasure. We are incredibly fortunate to be supported by a tireless staff, a wonderful community of owners, and a terrific set of collaborators. Everyone put his or her best foot forward to make this event at Tenerife’s finest residential and tourism destination a true joy. Thank you all!

We kicked off the celebrations with a new component this year: a vernissage for the exhibition organized by Tenerife art gallery La Musa in Las Terrazas’ The Club on the evening of the 3rd. The event was attended by a lively mix of press, owners, friends and guests of The Ritz-Carlton, Abama. This show marks the first time that The Club has played host to an exhibition of this caliber, featuring the work of well known artists from Tenerife, and a number of pieces were purchased by attendees. The exhibition is open until the 20th of November, so please drop by if you haven’t already!

Next up on Friday the 4th was the main sport event: our Owners Cup golf tournament. Every year we are amazed by the quality and enthusiasm of our participating residents. This year the single individual Stableford tournament saw 60 participants, raring to go even for the 8am tee time. The groups of four experienced a perfect temperature of 24º C as they set about to conquer the links, stopping only at the 10th hole, where Costa Adeje restaurant El Churrasco provided light refreshments, wine and beer and a barbecue for the players before they continued on with their round.

Following on from the golf, the players were greeted with champagne provided by Taittinger and a beautiful buffet lunch perfect for mingling and debriefing about the morning’s event. Winners were announced by Brendan Breen, the Director of Abama Golf, at the Gala Dinner at the clubhouse the following evening, and it looks as though, at least among the men, there is now a clear player to beat. Josef Teufner won his category for the second year in a row, with Harry Dwyer and David Seebauer close on his heels. In the Women’s Category, Anne Marie Bogaert, Veronika Teufner and Marie Deschreeder went 1, 2, and 3. Congratulations to all our players and especially our winners, whose bragging rights should see them through most of their interactions at Abama over the coming months!

Last but certainly not least, the Gala Charity Dinner provided the main event for Saturday night. Our more than 130 guests filled the space to absolute capacity with everyone turning up to back the Alda Foundation, which supports the education of youth in Paraguay.

The evening began at 8pm on the terrace of The Casa Club with a cocktail, then segued delightfully into the dinner itself, with an extensive menu of options provided by My Way and incredible wines from El Gusto por el Vino, one of our favorite Santa Cruz wine & liquor boutiques. During the meal we enjoyed not only the Alda Foundation video, but also a presentation from Jordi Robinat, the president of Arum Group, detailing all the important resort news and thanking attendees for their support.

Our annual Gala Charity Auction also played out during dinner, with some doubtless very happy winners. The auction items this year were absolutely incredible, including FC Barcelona tickets for El Clásico, VIP access to the Formula 1 event in Mont Meló, and many more. We (and surely our owners) can’t wait to see how we top these in next year’s auction. All the proceeds from the auction this year are going to Joven Adelante, one of the Alda Foundation’s programs designed specifically to help teens prepare academically for attending university.

After the announcement of the golf tournament winners and the receipt of their prizes, it was time to push back the chairs and dance, of course! We were thrilled this year to enjoy the Frank Sinatra interpretations of Bruno Oro & The Tenerife Big Band, a truly classic sound for this most elegant of evenings. The image of our residents dressed to the nines and dancing along to the beloved “New York, New York” has been replaying in our minds all week. Thank you again to everyone who helped to create these indelible memories.
