Lava & Vineyards

17 November 2023 10:30 - 17:45h

The Canary Islands are unique in the world of viticulture and enology. Cultivation began in the XV Century when the first grape varieties were brought to the islands by monks, explorers, conquistadors, merchants, and European colonists. The first historical records of its introduction refer to the “Aníbal vineyard” on Fuerteventura, and the history of winemaking on the islands has been marked by milestones such as the international prestige that accrued to its Malvasía wine in the XVI Century, when it came to popularity in the European courts and was even lauded by William Shakespeare.

Thanks to incredible raw materials, singular terrain, and the expertise and professionalism of its enologists, the Canary Islands produce wines with a marked personality conditioned by the salinity of the ocean and volcanic minerals, as diverse as the landscapes of the archipelago itself.

Bodegas Monje

17 November 2023

Bodegas Monje is located in a beautiful area surrounded by vineyards, with the Atlantic Ocean as backdrop. Its main building offers magnificent views from its restaurant and outdoor terrace. The visit begins in its emblematic Cask Hall, where time seems to stop and tradition and history come to the fore. This is where the family formerly made its wines and where today it proudly displays the best bottles made over the course of the bodega’s 66 years of existence.

Winemaking first began here in 1750, and the bodega was reconstructed in 1956 and modernized in 1983 to bring its production capacity up to 160,000 liters. The old oak barrels are still here and the bodega continues to use them to ferment and age its traditional reds, which sell under the DOP Islas Canarias – Canary Wine.

Environmental and cultural sustainability remain an important part of the bodega’s development, and one of its current projects, Vinotinte, produces ecoprints, textiles that are dyed naturally by artist Nathalie Leturcq using material obtained from the wine cultivation process. Bodegas Monje is also involved in the LEY SECA gastrotheater; the Picnics in the vineyards; and the erotic wine night, Wine&Sex.
